Comprehensive TMJ evaluation

We start by looking at the whole picture: your health history, symptoms, jaw joints and muscles, teeth and bite, jaw movement, and posture. We also consider whether surrounding tissues or pain coming from another area may be involved. Treatment recommendations are based on your individual findings.

What happens at your first visit

Listen. Dr. Leon reviews your health history and symptom questionnaire with you. She asks when your symptoms began, how they affect your daily life, what makes them better or worse, and what you hope to improve.

Examine. Dr. Leon examines your head, neck, face, and jaw, as well as the inside of your mouth. She checks your joints, muscles and surrounding soft tissues, teeth and bite; measures how your jaw moves; evaluates areas of tenderness; and assesses your posture.

Explain. Dr. Leon discusses her findings and what may be contributing to your symptoms in plain language, in English or Spanish.

Plan. You'll discuss appropriate treatment options and next steps, with time to ask questions. If another evaluation or referral would be helpful, Dr. Leon will explain why.

3D imaging in the office

In-office iCAT 3D imaging is available and may be recommended based on your evaluation. It can provide a closer look at the jaw joints, teeth, and other structures captured in the scan, including the nasal passages and airway. When it is recommended, it is taken here rather than somewhere else.

How long it takes, and what to bring

Plan for about an hour. Your visit may take longer if paperwork is incomplete or imaging or treatment takes place that day. The office emails your new-patient paperwork when you book. Please bring a copy of your ID or driver's license.

If you are in significant pain, Dr. Leon will discuss whether conservative treatment can begin at your first visit following your evaluation and consent.

In English or Spanish, with Dr. Leon herself

Dr. Leon is a bilingual provider and speaks directly with Spanish-speaking patients in the language they prefer, which can matter when a condition is complex and there are options to weigh.

  • 3D imaging in our office

Tampa TMJ has an iCAT 3D (CBCT) scanner right in the office. When your evaluation calls for it, the scan gives a closer look at your jaw joints, teeth, nasal passages and airway, with no trip to another office.

  • Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)

Injectable PRF is prepared from a small sample of your own blood, rich in platelets that release growth factors involved in healing. Dr. Leon does every step herself in one visit, from the blood draw to the procedure, so you see one familiar doctor start to finish. She uses it for selected joint and surrounding tissue concerns, usually as part of a broader conservative plan.

  • Custom oral appliances

TMJ night appliances, orthopedic repositioning appliances for day or night, and a retainer when you need one, all made for you from your exam and your goals. Dr. Leon checks the fit and adjusts them as your needs change.
