In Dr. Leon's words

Throughout my years practicing first as a general dentist and later as an orthodontic specialist, I saw many patients struggling with jaw pain, headaches, TMJ symptoms and changes in function, often without knowing where to turn for help.

I wanted to better understand these complex conditions, look beyond simply managing symptoms, and identify the factors that may be contributing to each patient's individual problem.

Later in life, I experienced TMD myself and sought treatment as a patient. Being on the other side of the chair gave me an even deeper understanding of how frustrating and disruptive these symptoms can be. That personal experience has added another layer of empathy and perspective to the way I care for my patients today.

Today I am grateful to care for patients who come to Tampa TMJ from throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond, including some who travel significant distances seeking TMJ care.

Our Whole-Patient Approach to Wellness

At Tampa TMJ, we believe that caring for our patients goes beyond treating jaw pain alone. We recognize the important connection between the mind and body and how physical discomfort, stress, sleep quality, and emotional well-being can influence overall health and quality of life.

Stress and emotional tension can contribute to muscle tightness, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and other behaviors that may aggravate TMJ-related symptoms. Likewise, chronic jaw and facial pain can disrupt sleep, increase stress, affect daily functioning, and impact overall well-being.

Our approach focuses on understanding the whole person, not just their symptoms. We consider the physical, behavioral, and lifestyle factors that may influence each patient’s condition, with an emphasis on personalized, conservative care, stress awareness, healthy habits, and overall wellness.

Our goal is to help patients experience greater comfort, improved function, and a better quality of life while supporting their overall health and well-being.

Care in English and Spanish

Dr. Leon is a bilingual provider and speaks directly with Spanish-speaking patients in the language they prefer, which can matter when a condition is complex and there are options to weigh.

  • How I approach TMJ care

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to care for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Jaw pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can be complex and may involve the TM joints, the muscles, the bite and function, as well as other contributing factors. Whether symptoms came on gradually or began after an accident, injury, dental treatment or another event, I listen carefully to the patient's history and evaluate the bigger picture. I combine a detailed clinical evaluation with appropriate imaging when it is indicated, then build an individualized plan based on each patient's findings and needs. Depending on the patient, care may include conservative therapies, custom appliances, therapeutic modalities, regenerative approaches, or other treatment options. Most importantly, I want my patients to understand what we are finding, what may be contributing to their symptoms, and why we are recommending a particular course of care.

  • What I want you to leave with

Many of my patients have been living with pain or other symptoms for months or even years and may have seen multiple providers before finding us. Others come after an accident or injury, with symptoms they never had before. I take the time to listen to their story, to understand how the symptoms are affecting daily life, and to explain what we are seeing in a way that makes sense. I want patients to leave their first visit feeling heard, better informed, and with a clearer understanding of the next steps in their care. My goal is not simply to treat a diagnosis on paper, but to care for the person experiencing it.
