Understanding your pain comes first
Jaw pain can come from one or several sources, including the jaw joints and discs, muscles and surrounding tissues, teeth, or neck. Dr. Leon listens to what you are experiencing and examines how your jaw moves and functions before recommending treatment. She may consider PRF for selected joint or surrounding tissue concerns, but it is not the answer to every kind of jaw pain.
Every step in one visit
If PRF is right for you, Dr. Leon personally performs every step in the office: she draws the small blood sample, prepares the PRF, and performs the procedure. It is all done during the same visit, so there is no need to go to another clinic for the blood draw or preparation. You see one familiar doctor from start to finish.
Part of a broader plan
Dr. Leon usually incorporates PRF into a broader plan of conservative care tailored to you. This may include hands-on muscle therapy and myofascial release, light therapy, guided jaw exercises, and advice on nourishing food choices that place less strain on the jaw. She may also discuss nutritional support or supplements when appropriate. Her goal is for you to understand your options and feel confident in the plan you choose together.
Questions patients ask
What is the difference between PRF and PRP?
Both are prepared from a small sample of your own blood and contain platelets that release growth factors. PRF forms a fibrin network after it is placed, which may allow those growth factors to be released more gradually. At Tampa TMJ, Dr. Leon offers injectable PRF.
Is PRF used for every kind of jaw pain?
No. Dr. Leon may consider PRF for selected joint or surrounding tissue concerns, but it is not the answer to every kind of jaw pain. Your evaluation comes first.
Do I have to go somewhere else for the blood draw?
No. If PRF is right for you, Dr. Leon draws the sample, prepares the PRF and performs the procedure herself, during the same visit.
