In-office therapies for TMJ

Laser therapy, photobiomodulation, TMJ manual therapy and myofascial release, hot and cold therapy, TENS and guided jaw exercises: Dr. Leon uses the ones that fit your evaluation, right here in the office, as part of your plan.

Part of a conservative plan

A conservative plan tailored to you may include hands-on muscle therapy and myofascial release, light therapy, guided jaw exercises, and advice on nourishing food choices that place less strain on the jaw. She may also discuss nutritional support or supplements when appropriate.

Chosen from your evaluation

Which therapies are appropriate depends on what your evaluation finds. Dr. Leon's goal is for you to understand your options and feel confident in the plan you choose together.

  • Comprehensive TMJ evaluation

We start by looking at the whole picture: your health history, symptoms, jaw joints and muscles, teeth and bite, jaw movement, and posture. We also consider whether surrounding tissues or pain coming from another area may be involved. Treatment recommendations are based on your individual findings.

  • Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)

Injectable PRF is prepared from a small sample of your own blood, rich in platelets that release growth factors involved in healing. Dr. Leon does every step herself in one visit, from the blood draw to the procedure, so you see one familiar doctor start to finish. She uses it for selected joint and surrounding tissue concerns, usually as part of a broader conservative plan.

  • Custom oral appliances

TMJ night appliances, orthopedic repositioning appliances for day or night, and a retainer when you need one, all made for you from your exam and your goals. Dr. Leon checks the fit and adjusts them as your needs change.
